“I would make them all learn English: and then I would let the clever ones learn Latin as an honor, and Greek as a treat.”
~Sir Winston Churchill
In this class, which is a continuation of our Fall Semester class, students will continue to expand their vocabulary and knowledge of Attic Greek grammar. Building on their knowledge of inflection and present system verbs, we will be able to explore more original readings from Greek authors. Through reading and direct grammar instruction, we will expand our grammatical foundations, encountering verbs (omega and contract verbs) in the active, middle, and passive voices, pronouns, and the 3rd declension.
By studying vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, students will not only gain an appreciation for Greek, but will also learn more about English and language in general. Students will also begin to read sentences in original Greek.
Note to parents:
- The minimum enrollment for this class is four students. As this is a continuing class, if it does not meet minimum enrollment, the instructor will contact all enrolled families to discuss options for continuing study.
- If your student is not a continuing Athena’s student, please contact the instructor to discuss proper placement.
- In this class, we will be reading Greek that was written by Greek writers. Although detail is not included, some of the readings may contain mature content or themes, which may include violence (including rape), death, references to sex, and ample amount of misogyny. While these themes may be present, as they are in many world mythologies (like Greek Mythology), fairy tales, and literature, they are not the primary focus of our class. The main focus of the class is Greek language acquisition.
- Informal student-led group study sessions will be planned throughout the semester for students to ask questions and practice their Greek skills.
